The Flip Analysis

This analysis module is designed to search and analyze the movement of the flips of a sea-animal (e.g. an penguin) when diving. The animal must had been depoyed by a logger which records the depth and the movement of the flips. After having loaded the depth data and - the simultaneously recorded - flip data into MultiTrace the analysis works in this way: In a first step MT searches an entire dive event. Then MT divides the ascent and descent phase of the diving event into coherent sections: The first section contains the data 0m < rec.Depth < 2m, the 2nd section : 2m < rec.Depth < 4m, the 3rd section: 4m < rec.Depth < 6m and so on. The stepsize can be set by the user. Example: step size=5m leads to this ranging of the depth data: 0..5 m 5..10 m 10..15 m and so on. (The bottom phase will not be divided into section, it will be processed in a different way. Explained below.)Then MT analyzes the flips of the current section and exports for this section the characteristics of the flip movements (listed in the table below). Each set of the calculated characteristics - the results of the analyses - will be written into one line of a text-file. In this way MT processes all sections of the current dive event until the end of the current dive is reached.

Fig 1. MT found a dive event and scans the descent phase of the dive channel. It found all flip events at the flip channel of the first dive meter.

Fig2,3,4: MT searches succesively all flip events at the dive range 0 ..1 meter, then 1...2 meter at last 2 ...3 meter.

Fig 5. After reaching the end of the descent phase MT continues it's work automatically at the dive ascent phase and finds all flips 3..2 meters, 2..1 meters... and so on till the end of the dive. After having worked out an entire dive event MT searches the next dive event and starts scanning the next dive event in the same way as the

Fig 6. Here the user had choosen itself a desired section where MT has to search flip events. In this case this is the dive bottom phase.

Results of the flip analysis

# Nr of event
Onset Onset of the deoth section as dd.mm.yy hh:mm:ss
uration Duration of the section [sec]
Mean Gap Mean time between flip events [sec]
MinAmpl Minimal amplitude of the flips
MaxAmpl Maximal amplitude of the flips
Mean Min Value Mean amplitude of the flips
Mean Max Value Mean of minimal values of the flips
Frequency Frequency of the flips
Depth Mean depth of the current section [m]
VertVelo Mean vertical velocity [m/sec]

In a second mode it is possible to select freely a section, and to let MT analyze this section. The results are of the same format as those of the 'stepwise'-analyses of the diving-down-phase and the diving-up-phase. But the results will be exported into a separate text-file. This mode may be used to analyze the dive bottom phase - in case such an analysis is desired. Thus MT produces two result files, one contains all results of the stepwise analyses, the other one contains all flip characteristics of the bottom phases.Forced by user-command MT searches the succeeding dive event and performs the analysis for this next dive event ... and so on until the user terminates the analysis or till the end of the depth- or the end of the according flip channel is reached.
